Reduce Your Business Stress in 5 Simple Steps

Stress is a part of life. Owning a business can magnify the amount of stress in your life. Although stress can be good for us in small amounts, a build up of stress can make you feel like you’re just not getting anything done. Follow these 5 simple steps to reduce your business stress.

Step 1 – Understand Your Business and Life Goals

So, if we’re talking about business stress, why are we bringing up that you should understand both business and life goals? Because small business owners must learn how to juggle both their business and personal endeavors. If you don’t pay enough attention to your business, it suffers. If you don’t pay enough attention to your personal goals, you become unhappy.

To be able to find the right balance between your business and personal goals, you must first understand what it is that you want to achieve with both. You can do this by writing them down. Make a list of your business goals. Then make a list of your personal goals. Next, look at each item that you listed. Consider a reasonable time period that it would take to accomplish each one.

Step 2 – Make a Reasonable Plan to Meet Your Goals

We each only get 24 hours in a given day. You have should have a plan to meet your long term and your short term goals. This can be a daily activity. You could spend time every day planning out your day. Determine which three items you must accomplish for the day. Then, make sure that you schedule in time to work on your long term goals.

Step 3 – Take Action Every Day

One reason why we tend to get stressed out as business owners is because of procrastination. We think something won’t take very long and so we put it off. We think that we can just make time to do something later and so we put it off. Procrastination becomes a problem because tasks often take much longer than we thought they would. This causes us to become stressed. We become upset because we know we mismanaged our time and because we may not finish a project in the way in which we had initially hoped. If you plan to devote 45 minutes each day to business development, make sure that you do it. Don’t skip it. If you plan to spend two or three times each week working toward a personal goal, make sure that you do it. Don’t put it off.

Step 4 – Eliminate Distractions

One of the best ways to manage your time so that you can take action every day is to eliminate distractions. Distractions can be personal or business related. It could be automatically replying to a text every time your phone gives you a notification. You could be spending too much time checking your email. It could be constantly checking your social media. We often do not truly understand the amount of time that we lose each day on these distractions. Turn off your ringer. Close out your social media accounts. Turn off your email notifications. Remember that technology was created to be used at our convenience. Sadly, it’s become less of a convenience and more of an obligation for many people. Take control over the distractions in your life in order to get more done and eliminate stress.
