5 Self-care Tips for Busy Professionals

You may have seen it in the media, but passed it by. Self-care is making headlines. What exactly is self-care? It can be easily summed up as taking the time to take care of yourself. Self-care takes care of not only your physical health, but your mental health as well. It’s so important to take care of yourself as a professional. If you don’t, you could come down with an illness. You can also fight stress and increase productivity with self-care. You are a pitcher; allow yourself to be filled so you can keep pouring into your business by considering the tips below.

Create a Self-care Plan

Self-care should be planned. As a professional, your time is valuable. You plan the majority of the day. Your self-care should also be planned by setting aside time on your calendar. You can plan small instances of self-care every day and a large instance once or twice a month. Self-care can be any number of activities that you enjoy and that make you feel energized. It can be yoga. It can be taking a nap. It can even be taking a walk or indulging in a hobby that you enjoy.

To make a self-care plan, make three columns or circles on a piece of paper. Name the first column or circle ‘Mind,’ the second one ‘Body,’ and the third one ‘Spirit.’ Decide what self-care activities support the well-being of each of these categories. Perhaps you like to play solitaire to challenge your mind, take bubble baths to refresh your body, and sing to refresh your spirit. Fill in what works for you, then fill in your calendar with those objectives. With a plan in place, you will keep yourself cared for!

Get Enough Sleep

Did you know that sleep is a type of self-care? If you do not get enough sleep, you will crash and burn. Sleep must be factored in to your every day schedule as a busy professional or entrepreneur. You should aim to get at least six hours of sleep a night. Any less over an extended period of time and you are headed to a burnout.

Keep Your Body Moving

Like sleep, exercise keeps you healthy. Exercise is also a form of self-care. To keep your heart and mind healthy, get out of your office and into the gym. If you don’t have a gym membership, you can take online of video classes. You can even do yoga, Pilates, stretching, dance, and certain aerobics inside your office. Other exercises will get you outside, such as running, walking, and swimming. Martial arts and self-defense are also considered exercise as well. An exercised body makes for a fresh mind and healthy heart.

A Tidy Space

Wait a minute, cleaning doesn’t sound like self-care! Keeping a clean and tidy work or living area can come with a host of benefits. By getting rid of that which doesn’t bring you happiness or serve you, you keep a tidier space. When you are cleaning, you don’t just tidy your area. You also clean your mind. Tidying of the space and the mind sounds like self-care.
